In-Depth Competitor Analysis and Market Entry Strategy for a Social Networking App
Summary
An entrepreneur had an idea for a social networking app — where people set personal goals, track their progress, and share the journey with friends — but was wary of investing in development before knowing how competitive it would be. INNERLUXES provided market entry consulting in three steps: analyzing competitors, conceptualizing the app, and planning a project roadmap. In three weeks, the Client had a clear view of the market and a grounded estimate of the development, support, and marketing investment needed to compete.
About the Client
The Client is an entrepreneur with a startup idea for a social networking app where people set personal goals, mark their progress toward them, and share the journey with friends.
A Startup Idea That Needed a Feasibility Check
Keen on the idea but cautious about investing in development, the Client first wanted to understand how competitive the app would be in the current market. It approached INNERLUXES for market entry consulting to help decide whether the idea was worth pursuing.
From App Idea to Business Plan in Three Steps
To address the Client's concerns, INNERLUXES proposed three steps — analyze competitors, conceptualize the app, and plan a project roadmap.
Competitor research. INNERLUXES selected and analyzed 15 competitive social networking apps with 10,000+ downloads, studying for each:
- Functionality — the fundamental features shared by all apps and the killer features that set certain apps apart as competitive advantages. For example, all competitors allowed manual goal tracking, while only some added smartwatch integration to automatically track physical activity for sports goals.
- App support costs — a rough estimate of competitors' operational support expenses, drawn from LinkedIn data on their development offices and open development and support vacancies, with average salaries applied to arrive at a rough monthly support cost.
- Advertising expenses — a rough advertising budget, calculated by tracking each app's advertising traffic to the app stores and multiplying it by average cost-per-click rates for the main keywords, indicating the minimum marketing budget the Client would need to compete.
The findings were compiled into a comparison table that laid out the competitive landscape and rough estimates of what competitors spend to keep their apps operational and popular.
App conceptualization. Drawing on the analysis of fundamental and killer features, INNERLUXES planned the functionality of the Client's app and created UI mockups to show how it would look and work. Once the concept was agreed with the Client, INNERLUXES provided a development cost estimate.
Project roadmap. INNERLUXES turned the big picture into an actionable plan and realistic expectations, with a roadmap covering the duration of each stage of the development lifecycle and the total project length, plus team composition — each member's role and contribution and the number of FTEs required.
A Foundation for an Informed Go/No-Go Decision
In just three weeks, the Client gained a clear understanding of the competitive market and a rough estimate of the development, support, and marketing investments needed to compete confidently with a new app — everything required to make a carefully weighed decision on the startup. If the Client moves ahead, it can build on the app's functional concept, UI mockups, and development roadmap from INNERLUXES.
