Summary

A US startup behind augmented reality digital signage needed an easy way for its customers to create AR content for its interactive smart screens, without building every app from scratch. INNERLUXES delivered a Unity 3D SDK — complete with inline documentation and integrated into the cloud admin panel — that taps the screens' real-time object- and motion-tracking, letting the Client and its customers build AR apps quickly. The tool helped the Client stay competitive and drew the attention of large brands worldwide.

About the Client

The Client is a US startup that develops digital signage solutions featuring large augmented reality (AR) screens. The content shown on the smart screens is managed through a cloud-based administration panel that INNERLUXES's web application developers had built.

Making AR Content Easy to Create for Interactive Screens

The smart displays use real-time depth-sensing technology to detect objects — such as human bodies — and motions like gestures, and to react according to the behavior defined by the running AR software. However, the Client lacked the in-house skills to build a tool for creating AR software that could harness this advanced capability. It also recognized that forcing potential customers to develop AR apps from scratch could put them off, so it needed a way to make AR content creation for its interactive screens easy and accessible.

A Unity 3D SDK Wired into the Admin Panel

Having been fully satisfied with INNERLUXES's web app development, the Client returned for further help. In one month, INNERLUXES delivered a Unity 3D software development kit (SDK) along with inline documentation and, at the Client's request, integrated the tool with the web-based administration panel.

The apps the Client develops act as 'templates' that its customers can then customize and use; a customer who doesn't want a ready-made template can use the SDK to build its own AR applications. Tailored to the Client's AR development needs, the SDK leverages the displays' object- and motion-tracking technology, making the data captured in real time an integral part of an AR app's functionality. With it, the Client's developers can, for example, recreate a person standing in front of a display as a 3D model on screen and augment that image with clothing or accessories.

An Easy AR Toolkit That Drew Global Brands

Thanks to the plugin, the Client's solution makes creating and using AR content for digital signage easy. This helps the Client stay highly competitive in the digital signage market — and it has already attracted the attention of multiple large brands around the world.
