How We Price Custom Software Development
Fixed price, agreed before we start
The number in the quote is the number on the invoice. Small changes inside the agreed scope are absorbed; a change of direction gets its own short written quote that you approve first. You never receive an invoice for hours you did not know about.
Best for: every project where the brief is clear enough to scope, which after a short scoping phase is nearly all of them.
Scoping phase first, then the fixed price
When the brief is thin, we quote a short scoping phase on its own. You get a written scope, an architecture and a phase plan that you own whether or not you build with us, and then a fixed number for the build based on those documents rather than on a guess.
Best for: new products, rebuilds of systems nobody fully understands, and anything a board has to approve.
What we put a fixed number on
We do not publish ballpark figures, because a number without a scope behind it is a guess and the client pays for the guess. These are the kinds of systems we quote most often; each gets its own fixed price after scoping.
Field service, booking and mobile commerce apps
A mobile field service or booking app; mCommerce.
Mobile banking and telehealth apps
A mobile banking app or mobile telehealth app.
Operations management software
Operations management software of average complexity.
Inventory and warehouse systems
Inventory software for a large enterprise.
Ecommerce portals
An ecommerce portal for a mid-market company.
Process automation platforms
Digital process automation solution.
Big data and AI platforms
Big data solution with AI and ML.

Custom Software Development: Step by Step
Custom application development is the process of creating from-scratch solutions to address the specific needs of an organization. Here is how we usually engineer bespoke software at INNERLUXES:
1
Discovery (if you do not have a requirements specification yet)
Duration: 1 – 3 months.
A dedicated business analyst (BA) or a BA team:
- Explores your specific business needs and opportunities, documents the key processes future software must cover, and considers relevant regulatory constraints.
- Elicits, gathers and processes the opinions, expectations and concerns of all stakeholders.
- Structures and prioritizes the requirements for future software based on business value.
- Analyzes risks.
2
Project planning
Duration: ~ 2 weeks.
A project manager:
- Defines project deliverables and scope clearly.
- Draws a project plan and a detailed work breakdown structure.
- Composes the team and maps collaboration flows between the team members and your stakeholders.
- Provides accurate time and budget estimates.
- Introduces a tailored set of KPIs to measure the project's health.
- Conducts a cost-benefit analysis and calculates NPV and ROI.
- Prepares a risk management strategy.
3
Architecture, UX and UI design
Duration: 2 weeks – 3 months.
The team:
- Designs the architecture, data flows, and integration points.
- (optionally) Defines parts of your existing software that can be re-used.
- Conducts UX research and designs wireframes, prototypes, and interface mockups.
4
First production release
Duration: 1 – 6 weeks for the first working version.
The team:
- Defines the optimal functional scope for the first release depending on each feature's expected value for end users.
- Codes the release relying on our established development approaches.
5
Development and testing
Duration: 1 – 3 weeks for each release.
The team:
- Ensures safe continuous releases via automated CI/CD pipelines.
- Tests software to verify its proper functioning, performance, and security.
- (wherever reasonable) Employs test automation to decrease testing time and costs.
- Reports regularly on the development progress and build quality.
6
Deployment and setup
The team:
- Deploys the software. (optionally) A trial implementation can be conducted for a limited number of users and with technical support.
- Performs knowledge transfer to your internal team or whoever runs support after launch.
- (if needed) Trains your internal users on how to use the solution.
7
After-release maintenance
Duration: 1 – 3 months.
The team:
- Answers your and your users' after-release questions and resolves user issues, if any.
- Manages incidents, configuration changes and updates.
8
Continuous application support (on demand)
Upon agreement, we can continue taking care of the performance, stability and evolution of your application after the warranty support is over.

What You Get in a Fixed-Price Custom Software Project
A client asked me last month what the difference is between our quote and the two others on his desk. The honest answer is that ours is the only one that will still be the same number at the end. Here is what sits behind it.
A scope you own before you pay for a build. Whether the brief is a paragraph or a forty-page tender, the first thing you receive is a written scope and architecture: what the system does, for whom, which integrations it touches, what is deliberately left out, and where the risks are. For a thin brief that document is a short scoping phase with its own small fixed price. You keep it whether or not you build with us.
The engineers you met. The people who scoped the work are the people who build it. My team is 132 senior engineers, and nobody on your project is a junior learning on your budget. Two developers, a QA engineer, an architect for the first weeks and a project manager you can reach the same day is a typical shape; the quote names them.
A staging environment you can open at any time. The running build lives on a URL you have from the first sprint. Every pull request is reviewed by a senior engineer before it lands there. A weekly written report, five minutes to read, says where we are against the plan, what needs a decision from you, and where the effort went, as information, never as an invoice.
Everything handed over, nothing held back. The repository is in your organisation from the first commit. Infrastructure is code, so your team can rebuild production from the repository. The test suite, the CI pipeline and the runbook come with the product, not as extras. In the last two weeks your own engineer deploys a release with ours watching, and we do not call it finished until that works.
Thirty days of fixes inside the price. Support quoted after launch. We quote support only when both sides know what the system actually needs. Quoting it up front would be guessing, and you would pay for the guess.
Two examples, written without client names because both engagements are under NDA: a custom operations platform replacing spreadsheets at a services firm and a custom client portal built on top of an existing ERP. The scoping workbook and the plan generator we use are public on GitHub: scope-to-plan.
Custom Software Development Services FAQ
Is custom software worth the investment?
The major reason to opt for custom software is that mass-market and free tools are often unable to meet unique business needs, do not support specific integrations, offer limited or costly scalability, and may be more expensive in the long run.
At INNERLUXES, we analyze the financial feasibility of custom software development on a case-by-case basis and consider prioritized options with stakeholders.
How much does it cost to engineer custom software?
The cost of software engineering depends on your project's scale and complexity, shaped by multiple factors:
- Software type and the number of platforms supported (web, mobile, desktop).
- Number and complexity of software features.
- Custom software design uniqueness and complexity.
- Number and complexity of integrations with other software systems.
- Infrastructure requirements (availability, performance, security, latent capacity and scalability).
You can request a free project cost calculation from INNERLUXES if you need to assess planned software.
What cooperation model is better for custom development?
It depends on the development resources you have in-house. If none, a dedicated development team or a fully-managed delivery is the fit. If you have a team but lack specific competencies, go for a team augmentation model.
Who decides on the development methodology?
Your software development vendor will advise on an optimal methodology. Here is our brief overview:
- At INNERLUXES, we use Agile (Scrum, Kanban, XP) to enable fast releases and easy changes.
- When accurately predictable budgets and timelines or adherence to industry regulations are in demand, we employ Waterfall.
- We offer the Iterative model when a customer wants both project flexibility and predictability.
Why should I entrust my project to INNERLUXES?
INNERLUXES is a reliable custom software development company with 132+ proactive experts who are focused on bringing tangible, measurable business value. We have delivered 68+ projects across 30+ industries. The price is agreed before we start and the quoted number is the number invoiced, the NDA is signed before the first technical call, and the repository is in your organisation from the first commit.
Your first production release ships in weeks rather than quarters, and you can check our published client projects before you commit.
Do you sign an NDA before we share our requirements?
Yes, always, and before the first technical call. Send yours or use ours. Most of what we build is under NDA, which is why the case studies on this page describe how we build a class of system rather than naming the client behind it.
What happens to the fixed price when the scope changes?
Small changes inside the agreed scope are absorbed; that is what the fixed price is for. A real change of direction gets a short written quote that you approve before work starts, and the original number does not move either way. You will never receive an invoice for hours you did not know were being spent.
Who owns the code and the infrastructure?
You do, from the first commit. The repository sits in your GitHub or Azure DevOps organisation, the cloud accounts are in your name, and the documentation is written so that an engineer who has never met us can run the system. Moving delivery in-house after launch is a normal outcome, not a failure.
Where is the work done and who writes the code?
INNERLUXES is registered as a US LLC in Wyoming and as a Private Limited company, and the engineering is done by our own employees, not subcontractors. The senior engineers you meet during evaluation are the ones on your project. If your compliance or grant paperwork needs the delivery location stated, we put it in writing before you sign anything.
